Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 ✅ What is BNS 2023 It is an Act of Parliament titled “The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023” , Act No. 45 of 2023. It replaces the previous criminal law code, the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC) in India. The law received the President’s assent on 25 December 2023. Its provisions came into effect from 1 July 2024 (unless specified otherwise) for implementation. 🧐 Key features and changes Structure: The BNS condenses the earlier code; it has 358 sections compared to the IPC’s 511 (approx) by reorganising and merging similar offences. Definitions: It consolidates definitions in a clearer way (eg. “act”, “child”, “animal”) under one section (Section 2) rather than scattered definitions. New offences & updates: Introduces or clarifies offences such as organised crime, terrorism, cyber-fraud, environmental offences.
